My Homemade Laundry Detergent

by - 1/05/2012 08:56:00 AM

I would like to share with you guys the homemade laundry detergent recipe that I have been using and I actually like it. I first read about homemade laundry detergent many years ago. However, it was the powder version and at that time I really was not interested in using the powdered version. (Fast Forward to last month) Last month while looking on Pinterest I saw a post about homemade laundry detergent and something about the post had me really intrigued to see if this product would really work for my family. All of the post I saw in regards to the homemade detergent was from people who did not live in the same state as me and I was a little worried about not being able to locate the products needed for the recipe. I read online while doing my little research that a lot of people were able to purchase the Fels Naptha bar at Ace hardware online. I noticed that once shipped the bar would be close to $2.00-3.00. (I was not willing to pay that much) I also realized that most people were able to purchase the bar at Walmart and their local grocery store. I looked online to see if my local Walmart would have the products and it showed that they were sold out of the Borax and they did not sell the Arm and Hammer Washing Soda or the Fels Naptha bar. During one of my shopping trips to Target, I was looking for the products needed. I was super excited when I located the box of Borax (in my mind I thought one down and two more to go). I was so happy I purchased two boxes. I did not even think to look for the Fels Naptha Bar or the washing soda. While searching the web I also saw that people were able to purchase the items at their local family dollar. At some point that week I was near a Family Dollar. I went to the store and did see any of the products needed and off I went to my local Stop & Shop (in the same area) and to my surprise they had the Fels Naptha Bar and the Washing Soda. I was so excited! I was so happy I purchased two of each. Prior to going to Stop & Shop, I went to my local Dollar Tree to purchase a food grater and also to see if they had the Washing soda (Dollar Tree was in the same shopping center as Stop & Shop). As soon I went home. I started the process of making my homemade laundry detergent.

24 hours later...
Ta-Da!

I currently have my large batch in an old large vinegar container. Once the contents get low in the smaller container. I just add more of my homemade product from the vinegar bottle (with water, half of each of the contents).
(old vinegar bottle with homemade laundry detergent)

How much does each product cost?
(Prices based on what I purchased in my state and town)
Borax $2.99 Target
Fels Naptha $1.33 at Stop & Shop
Fels Naptha $0.97 Walmart
Arm & Hammer Washing Soda  $3.50 at Stop & Shop
Arm & Hammer Washing Soda $3.24 at Walmart
(Borax from Target)

During a shopping trip at Walmart I was able to find the Naptha and the Arm & Hammer Washing soda for a cheaper price, of course, I brought one of each :).

Side note: Hubby was really against the whole homemade laundry idea. He is a Tide/ Woolite type of guy. Plus, he has really sensitive skin and he was worried about having some type of reaction. I have been using the product since the day it was ready (24 hours after I made it) and I am really pleased with the finished product. Plus think about all the money you will save :). (hubby has not complained about the product :)

Helpful tips and tricks

  • 1/2 cup or 1 cup of lemon juice ( instead of bleach)
  • 1/4 of white distilled vinegar  (instead of fabric softeners) Your clothing WILL NOT smell like vinegar

Have you tried homemade laundry detergent?
