Traveling Solo: Getting to San Juan Pt. 1

by - 1/17/2017 07:48:00 PM

Today I took my first solo trip ever. I have no sense of direction at all and was super nervous to take this trip alone.  The night earlier was my sister annual Martin Luther King dinner. I was the first person at the dinner and the first to leave. Typically, I would stay to help clean up, this time I had to get home to finish packing and to make sure I had everything I needed. Upon arriving home. I realized that I did not have any cash on me. Not even $1. of course I knew that I had to run to the bank to make sure that I had enough money to cover my taxi ride to and from the airport as well as food. I also noticed that I really did not have any snacks with me. I knew most likely that I did not have any breakfast and would be starving by the time that I was close to my destination. I went to my local grocery store and picked up breakfast bars and peanut butter crackers. While I was at the store I also asked for change. (my ban only gives twenty dollar bills like most banks.) Upon arriving home I made sure my that I had everything packed in my flight attire was all together. I also made sure that all of my liquids were packed on one side of the bag just to make it easy if anything did not meet the requirements. I knew I was going to a warmer clement do I dressed so. I had on flats but made sure that I wore socks before I did not want to walk barefooted through security. I arrived at my local airport on time. I  woke a little after 3:00 am and had a 5:00 am flight. I was a little worried because we were expecting and ice storm that same day.

Takeoff

While driving to the airport I noticed that the roads were clear. I arrived at my local airport on time. For some reason I was looking at my transfer flight gate and not at my home base ticket to goto the right way. My local airport doesn't even have gates over 50. I went through security and headed to the right gate. I took a breather and plugged in my phone and caught up on Snapchat. I'm not sure what happened or what made me double-check my gate number. However, it changed (note to self: always triple check your gate number.) I boarded my flight and was headed to New Jersey and during this flight I listened to a book. This flight didn't take long.

Layover

My layover was under two hours and during this time I  checked social media and again my flight information to make sure I was at the right gate. I boarded this flight and was not in route to San Juan. Ummm, not butt was hurting and I was exhausted. All I could think about was FIRST CLASS. I think this was the longest flight I've been on and at that point I was grateful for layover. I snacked on my snacks and watched a movie. I was so tired and I could fall asleep. I was in the middle seat of four and no one was to the left of me. Before I knew it, it was announced that we would be landing shortly to my destination.

San Juan

I got off of the plan and headed to ground transportation. I thought I knew where I was going. I waited and finally asked someone where I could get a taxi. (I was where regular pickups were.) I was in line for my taxi and waited maybe three minutes for it. From reviews I knew that my hotel was less than ten minutes away. It was close to 1:00 pm and I was in route to my hotel. A driver pulled up in a new suburban and opened the door for me and I was off to my hotel. I chatted with the driver and I arrived to my hotel. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the bell man. I pre-checked into my hotel and changed in the bathroom into my beach wear. I made it, I'm here,,, someone pinch me! I'm in San Juan!!!

  4. Solo trips are AMAZING! I went to Mexico once when I was 20 by myself. Probably not the safest option at 20 but it was so much fun and oddly rewarding. I hope you had a fantastic time!

  13. Solo trips really are the best! And I always hate when I get off the plane and have to go to the ATM because I don't have cash or any of their currency. It's always so much more expensive at the airport!
