The "January crud" is officially here. If you’ve been scrolling through the aisles of the pharmacy looking for relief, you might be surprised to find that the most powerful ingredients for respiratory support are already in your pantry.
Forget the artificial colors and high-fructose corn syrup found in store-bought bottles. Today, we’re making a traditional Kitchen Apothecary Cough Syrup using red onion, garlic, cinnamon, and raw honey.
Why This Remedy is a January Essential
In the peak of winter, our bodies need extra support. Unlike the "layering method" which can take 24 hours to draw out juices, this quick-infusion method (or simmered version) allows you to access the healing properties of these plants immediately.
The Powerhouse Ingredients:
• Red Onion: Onions are packed with quercetin, a flavonoid that helps reduce inflammation in the lungs and acts as a natural antihistamine.
• Smashed Garlic: When garlic is crushed, it releases allicin, a potent compound known for its antimicrobial and immune-boosting properties.
• Cinnamon Sticks: Not just for flavor! Cinnamon is a natural anti-inflammatory that helps soothe a scratchy, swollen throat.
• Raw Honey: Scientific studies have shown that raw honey can be just as effective as over-the-counter cough suppressants at coating the throat and reducing nighttime coughing.
How to Make My "No-Strain" Winter Syrup
Many traditional recipes tell you to strain the mixture, but I prefer to leave the onion and garlic in. This allows the honey to continue extracting the "good stuff" as it sits in your fridge.
Ingredients
• 1 medium Red Onion (chopped)
• 4 cloves Garlic (smashed)
• 2 Cinnamon sticks
• 1 cup Raw Honey
Instructions
1. Combine: Place your chopped onion, smashed garlic, and cinnamon sticks into a clean glass jar or a small saucepan.
2. Infuse: If you need it immediately, simmer the ingredients (minus the honey) with a half-cup of water for 10 minutes, let it cool to lukewarm, then stir in the honey. If you have time, simply submerge the raw ingredients in honey and let them sit.
3. The 48-Hour Rule: This is critical! While you can leave the onion and garlic in the jar, you must remove the cinnamon sticks after 48 hours. This prevents the syrup from becoming too bitter or woody.
4. Storage: Because this contains fresh vegetables, store your syrup in the refrigerator. It will stay fresh and potent for up to two weeks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to leave the onions and garlic in the syrup?
Yes! In fact, it's better health-wise. The garlic and onion pieces will soften and "candy" in the honey. You can even eat the pieces for an extra immune boost.
When should I take it?
Most people find relief taking 1 tablespoon every 2 to 3 hours or whenever a coughing fit starts.
Can children take this?
This remedy contains honey and should never be given to infants under one year of age due to the risk of botulism. For older children, consult your pediatrician.
In January, wellness is all about getting back to basics. By using what you have in your kitchen, you’re not just saving money—you’re giving your body bioavailable nutrients that support your recovery from the inside out.

I recently tried sugar waxing at home for the first time and I'm really impressed with how well it works. I'm not sure what I assumed it was going to be like, However, it's super easy to use, and it works! I love that this recipe is super affordable and you may already have the ingredients on hand.
Have you tried sugar waxing?
Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/4 cup lemon juice (or apple cider vinegar or lime juice)
- 1/4 cup water
Instructions
- Place a medium-sized pot on the stove and add all ingredients to the pot.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat, making sure to stir frequently to avoid burning.
- Once the mixture starts bubbling, reduce to medium heat and continue to stir frequently. (Do not use the same spoons)
- Remove the pot from heat when the mixture turns golden brown. The consistency of your sugar paste should be similar to hot syrup.
- Transfer to a bowl and let the paste cool for 30 minutes. The wax should still be warm but easy to manipulate. The wax sugar should be kept at room temperature, do not refrigerate.

I started making DIY hand soap last year, and I'm so happy to transition to foaming hand soap options, not only does this option only takes a few minutes to make, my hands feel super soft after using it. I love that this recipe is super easy to use, and doesn't require too many ingredients, don't get me wrong, the alternative option of making hand soap from bar soap is a wonderful option, however, I didn't like the way the particular bar soap I used left my hands feeling, and you also had to wait overnight to use the soap. The foaming hand soap you can actually use after you create it which I love. Whether you're in need of this recipe at the moment, or you're considering making this in the future. This recipe is perfect to keep on hand.

I’m always looking for natural ways to whiten my teeth. Growing up, my mom shared how my grandmother would always add baking soda to her toothbrush, to brush her teeth. That’s an awesome option as well. You can also add one teaspoon to this paste as well. I’ve been using this mixture for several weeks now, I’m loving my results. I would suggest using this product at least once a week.
Have you used turmeric teeth whitening paste before?

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I’m all about myself here and I typically have my self-care days on Sunday. I noticed that I use lip treatments however I haven’t used a lip scrub in a while. I decided to create my own DIY. And boy am I so happy that I did. Not only does this little scrub have my lips feeling super soft and plump. This lip scrub also tastes amazing because it’s made with everyday food that you typically eat. I love that I don’t have to worry about what I’m putting on my body. This lip scrub has simple ingredients and of course, you can add your own options like essential oil, vitamin E or anything else that you like. However, I kept this recipe super simple and the results are just amazing, my lips still super soft. I also love that you can use this scrub once a week or three times a week. Pretty much whatever works for your schedule. This lip scrub will also last for up to two weeks. I love that you can make a small batch to fit your needs. Especially with the winter months being so harsh on our skin, it is so nice to have your lips refreshed with this lip scrub. I also love this recipe that you can either simply use your finger or a toothbrush to apply the scrub with. However, it’s pretty much whatever your preference is.

- ¼ cup Brown Sugar
- 1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil
- 2 Teaspoons Cinnamon
- Combine all ingredients, stir to mix thoroughly, and store in an airtight container.

I’m a huge fan of room sprays, I actually meant to bring one along for our travels during our last trip. I ended up forgetting it, and as I was sitting at my desk today. I was inspired to create another one for my home, and place the one I created today in my office, and move the orange scent to our bathroom. I was inspired to try and recreate the William Sonoma Recipe. This recipe does not smell like my beloved William Sonoma Recipe. However, it is perfect. You can add more Rosemary if you prefer less of a lemon scent. I really can’t get enough of how this smells. It’s really perfect for this time of year.
DIY Vanilla Lemon Room Spray Recipe
Ingredients- 2-ounce spray bottle
- 1/2 teaspoon clear vanilla extract
- 10 Lemon essential oil drops
- 10 Rosemary essential oil drops
- 1/4 cup alcohol or witch hazel
- 1/4 cup distilled water (about)
Instructions
Combine Everything together with a funnel and enjoy!
Tip:
I prefer to start with the essential oil, followed by the vanilla, witch hazel or alcohol, and ending with the distilled water.

Not sure when I discovered the magic of coconut oil. However, It's truly has been one of my favorite all-purpose products. I pretty much use coconut oil for everything. Especially once I started my lifestyle change. It really has come in handy. I typically have a container in the kitchen and one that I use for personal use. Costco has huge containers that you can divide up. On wash day I'll pre-poo with the coconut oil. I pretty much use about one to two tablespoons and apply it on my dry hair and process with a processing cap (shower cap).
I also use coconut oil on my scalp and also as a body lotion during the cooler months. My skin feels so moisturized the next day, and also great for your cuticles as well. I haven't had any issues cooking with it. I use it as an oil replacement. I've fried french fries and even donuts with it. Let's not forget about all of my yummy desserts too. Also, coconut oil has been one of the best products I've found for removing makeup. (it's great as a facial moisturizer too.)
Everything I have listed I've tried on my own. I pretty much use coconut oil on a daily basis and it has become a staple in our home.

I perfect to have my spa days scheduled just as if I’m going to my local spa. The perfect part about this is if you decide to have a spa day on a whim. You already have the items needed on hand. Sometimes, the perfect day for me to have a spa day is during the week once everyone is sleep or while everyone is at school. It works out great because when you’re at a spa. It’s meant to be relaxing. I also try to plan a spa day over the weekend because it’s a great way to start off a new week. As well as when I return from vacation. It’s a great way to transition back to reality. It’s also a great idea to let your spouse and children know about your at home spa day and let them know your exceptions.Supplies

My Thoughts
I was gorgeously provided with the opportunity to review the Photowall wall Moral. If you've been following my blog for a while or even following me on social media. I have a wall in our living room that I wanted to turn into an accent wall for years and could never decide on the perfect design. I visited photo and I was instantly drawn to several designs. However, I narrowed down my choices to two and then one. I love DIY projects and I was beyond excited to take on this project. My order arrived super fast and the directions were very clear. I knew the items that I would need beforehand and they also offer kits to purchase so you don't have to go out and purchase a bunch of products to complete this project. I love that this is something that I can do with my family or even do on my own time. Thank you Photo for this wonderful opportunity! The Process
Conclusion
I absolutely love how the wall turned out. It brings so much height to the room and such a nice contrast of color. My Photowall is also a great conversation piece. The first thing people say when they enter my living room is “omg, how did you get that done, it looks amazing!”. Photowall makes the entire process so simple. It took me very little time to put up my wall moral and I did it all on my own. How exciting right! I followed the simple instructions and before I knew it. I was able to transform my living room into a masterpiece. Photowall is defiantly a service that I would recommend to my family/friends. The entire process was so simple and they have such a wide selection of products and services.
When I first stopped eating meat. I would eat fries pretty much every other day. Being a pescatarian that's one thing that I can guarantee that I would be able to find if I'm out and about. But let me just be honest. I love fries, potatoes and any other kind of starchy foods. That's just my jam! As you guys know, since going on my weight loss journey, I've stayed clear of fried foods unless it's a cheat meal.
I've noticed that I've seen fry seasonings while out and about and I was always worried about how many calories would be in each serving. I decided to do a little reach and create my own fry seasoning with the items that I had on hand at home. I will say that the calorie count for this recipe is under ten calories. This fry seasoning is amazing! If I could add it to everything that I eat, I would! The combine is perfect! It's not salty and all of the flavors burst in with each bite. This fry seasoning is a must-have every time I make fries now.
Do you like French fry seasoning on your fries?
Recipe
- ¼ tsp Paprika
- ¼ tsp Garlic Powder
- ¼ tsp Cumin
- 1/4 tsp parsley
- ¼ tsp Basil
- ½ tsp Himalayan salt
- Mix all ingredients together
- Use immediately or store in an airtight container
Note: I like to add the french fries in a brown paper bag fresh out of the fryer sprinkle the seasoning in the bag
Close the bag, and shake and severe immediately
It's that time I year and one of my goals for this year is to do more DIY projects and make things at home when I can. When I returned back from Canada my car was dirty. We've been getting a lot of rain in Connecticut which as you could imagine leads to a pretty dirty car.
I do not like going to the car wash. When my son was younger I would go because I thought it was super cool for him to see. Now as an adult. Unless it's in route to where I'm going. I'm all for DIY. I looked up recipes and tried to come up with my own variation. I don't need a ton of cash wash liquid around our home. The one-liter bottle will probably last me until the end of summer which I'm fine with.
My car came out so clean. I was actually shocked that the concentrate actually made suds.
Recipe
- 1 empty liter bottle with lid
- 1 tablespoon of Dawn (blue kind)
- 1 tablespoon of baking soda
Add the Dawn and baking soda to the bottle. (You will most likely need a funnel for this.) Fill the bottle with water. Add the lid and shake the bottle. Add 1/4 cup of the car wash concentrate to the bucket. Add water to the bucket and fill to the line.
What you'll need
- Car washing sponge
- Car wash concentrate (above)
- 2 buckets (one for soap and one for water)
- 1 car washing towel
Car washing tips
- Have a bucket filled with water to rinse your car.
- Was the top of the car first
- After washing all the windows (wash with liquid with a sponge and rinse immediately after with the clear water. )
Almost four years ago I took my first trip out of the country and traveled to Jamaica. This was my first time traveling alone without the Mister and boy was I super excited and nervous at the same time. When I arrived to Kingston Jamaica we went to a local eatery and the food was amazing. I had fresh coconut water for the first time and it was so delicious and cold. The scenery was beautiful and the weather was perfect. I really can't remember if it was the following day or the night we checked into the hotel. However, we went out for drinks on the hotel grounds and I woke up that next morning and it was the worse feeling ever. I was scared I wasn't sure what was wrong with me. To spare you the details I was hot, cold and could barely eat anything for several days. I was there for almost two weeks and I was miserable. Most days I wouldn't try anything new, which was so bittersweet because all I had planned on doing was eating. For most of the trip, I wasn't 100%. I was really scared to eat and wasn't sure how my body would respond. I did take something that I took a picture of that helped me out a lot. However, I can't locate the picture and I don't believe it was natural.
A couple of months ago I read about the benefits of Activated Charcoal one of the main uses that peeked my interest was using when traveling. I'm sure you've seen the videos of people brushing their teeth with the activated charcoal powder. If you follow me on SnapchatI mentioned how I was trying to whiten my teeth with active charcoal and I plan on giving my own review in a later post. I will say how I love how this product has so many great benefits and it's all natural. I don't want to prematurely give a review on whitening my teeth without trying it for a couple of weeks.
I do love how this product assists with anything from bloating to hangovers. Did you know that Activated charcoal is what's used to filter the water in the water filters pitchers? I was wondering what those black things were floating in the water. LOL I am also looking forward to using this product as a facial mask. I currently have a charcoal store brought mask that I'm using so I have to wait to purchase the actual powder. I do have the capsules which I used to brush my teeth.
Uses
- Detox
- Food Poisoning
- Hangover Cure
- Teeth Whitener
- Alleviates Gas & Bloating
Have you used activated charcoal before? For what?
One of my favorite ornaments this year for my Christmas tree was my homemade pine cone ornaments. I love how super easy this DIY was to make. I had everything on hand even the ribbon. Thus, not going with a satin ribbon. I was able to complete this project within a couple of hours. I also love that the gold pine cones could be used as decor throughout your home. I love the idea of putting them in a glass bowl or adding them to your garland or wreaths. The best part about this DIY is that you can make the pine cones any color that you like.
What's Needed:
- Ornament hooks
- Pine cones
- Ribbon
- Spray paint
- Screw eyes
