3 Tips for Packing for Florida In the Winter

by - 3/14/2018 10:30:00 AM

Living in Connecticut, dressing for the winter becomes second nature. However, It’s very different for me when traveling to a warmer state during winter months. I recently visited Fort Lauderdale and I was actually really surprised at the temps. It was defiantly a lot warmer than my state. However, I was happy that I dressed the way that I did and packed the items based on the weather forecast and not based on what I assumed the weather was going to be. Below, I'm sharing 3 Tips for Packing for Florida Winter.

Bring the essentials

When flying, I’ve learned to bring the essentials with me and if you’re flying to Florida I would suggest you bring these essentials with you or have the money to purchase these items in the event that they’re needed.

  • Umbrella
  • Sweater
  • Travel jacket

Florida is notorious for having rain showers out of the blue. Purchase a travel umbrella so you don't have to take any detours to the stores during your travels. I know this is probably second nature for most. However, if you're coming from a state that’s already warm and you’re not expecting Florida to be cooler or if you’re coming from a colder state hoping that Florida will be warmer. Don’t forget the essentials. This would be the perfect opportunity to bring a travel jacket with you to have on hand.

Wear Layers

During the fall/winter months, it’s very important to dress in layers. Especially if there is a chance that you’re going to be gone all day. When you leave for your daily adventures the temps may be in the high 70’s however when you return back to your hotel. It could possibly be in the low 60’s so dress accordingly. I always try to bring a jacket with me if I know that I’m going to be out and about. I would prefer to have to remove my layers instead of not dressing warm enough.

Check the Weather

I know this may sound like common sense, however, things change and the weather change. Prior to your trip even if your trip is planned a year in advance. Check to see what the weather was like a year from that day. Was it cold outside, was it the typically temps? Know what “typical” Florida weather is for that month. This is very important because what’s Typical for Jacksonville is totally different for what the average temps are in Orlando. That’s why it’s very important to get an idea of the temps, therefore, you’ll be able to plan your itinerary. Also, check the temps the day before your trip because the weather can possibly change.

Is it warm or cold in your state during the winter months?

  20. Great tips, especially the umbrella one. I live in Florida and it can rain any time. Sometimes even the forecast doesn't get you ready for it, so the umbrella is a must.

  21. With the cool temperatures, you won’t need a heavy winter jacket with you unless Florida goes through the rare cold spell. Even though it’s winter, it is still very sunny out - sunscreen is still a must. Be sure to have one pair of pants for a particularly cold day; otherwise, shorts should be just fine. Also, take into account how long you will be staying. If you plan on being in Florida for a week, bring enough clothes to last you the trip (unless you have access to laundry).
