Vegan Fried Chick'n - Fried Jackfruit

If you follow me on Instagram and TikTok. I'm a huge fan of fried chick'n. I actually prefer oyster fried chick'n. (if you haven't tried it, it's life-changing) The only problem with the oyster fried chick'n version is, oyster mushrooms are not accessible as the jackfruit. I love how versatile jackfruit is, and I actually use it often for my vegan version of a pulled pork sandwich. I've made this recipe several times already, and I absolutely love it. It's super easy to make, and it doesn't require too much time.

Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 20 oz. can jackfruit in brine
  • enough oil for frying
  • 1 tbsp hot sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups wheat flour
  • 1 tbsp tapioca flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp Himalayan salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp basil
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 4-5 shakes of oregano to taste
Vegan Egg batter (optional)
  • 1 cup Chickpea flour
  • 1/2 cup water
Buttermilk
  • 1 cup almond milk or other non-dairy milk
  • 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar or white vinegar
Instructions
  1. Add enough oil to a frying pan and turn on to medium-low heat.
  2. In a small bowl mix together the ingredients for the buttermilk and set aside.
  3. In another bowl of medium size, begin mixing together the breading ingredients and set aside
  4. Drain and rinse your jackfruit, and set aside (I perfect to leave the jackfruit at the size in the can.
  5. Add the jackfruit to the buttermilk mixture, and set aside.
  6. Combine all remaining ingredients for the flour mixture
  7. Add the jackfruit to the flour mixture
  8. Take the jackfruit out of the flour mixture and dip it in the egg batter.
  9. Dip the jackfruit back in the flour mixture.
  10. Now place the jackfruit into the oil.
  11. Allow the jackfruit to cook for 2-3 minutes.
  12. Once the jackfruit is fried, transfer to a plate with 3-4 layers of paper towels so that some of the oil can be absorbed from the fried jackfruit.
  13. Allow them to cool for 4 minutes before serving.
