Boys and Sewing?

I love that my son is so open to learning different things. He doesn’t have the mentality that oh “that’s for girls”. Well most of you may know that I really enjoy sewing; I really don’t get to do it as much as I would like, and I really haven’t posted about it in a while. Well, while I was sewing some more curtains for my sons room earlier this year. He asked if he could help. I was pleasantly surprised... He always asks when I’m cooking and when I’m making jewelry if he could help. However, I was still surprised of his willingness to want to learn how to sew. So, I hopped out of my seat and starting to take pictures of him sewing… As a parent, I really do not want my son dependent on anyone. I want him to be able to take care of himself, and if he needs assistance, it’s because it wants it, and not because he does not know how to do it for himself. I have met so many men and women, in my life that really don’t know the basic essentials and survival skills. For instance I’m fine if my son states that he does not like cooking, however, I want him to be able to know how to make a couple of meals for himself in order to survive. Anywho, I would love to hear the input of other moms… (Don’t get me wrong, not everything is for every child.)

Do you plan on teaching you son how to sew?

  3. My boyfriend sews and he is way better than I am on the sewing machine, and I LOVE that! I have two daughters and intend to teach them each to sew. It's such an invaluable skill, and so glad your son is into it!

  4. I taught my son to sew from a very early age. When he was deployed on a ship to Iraq, he took his sewing machine and ended up making a lot of money sewing on patches and stripes for the other marines. Unfortunately, during the offloading of the ship, the machine was lost in the Med, but he did get his money's work out of his $99.00 Walmart Singer machine!! I think this is great the boys learn to sew-make them more independent as they grow and can do for themselves.
