As someone who's constantly on the move capturing travel moments, I'm always excited when new gear promises to revolutionize how I document my journeys. The Insta360 X5 landed on my doorstep last week, and after taking it on a weekend hiking trip, I'm ready to share my first impressions of this impressive little camera. 

Unboxing Experience

Opening the Insta360 X5 package was straightforward - inside I found the camera itself, a USB-C cable, lens cloth, protective pouch, and user guide. The camera feels solid and premium with a rugged design that inspires confidence. I immediately noticed the replaceable lens design - a brilliant feature for adventure enthusiasts who might encounter scratches or damage in rough conditions. 

The Perfect Vlogging Companion

If you're a vlogger like me, the X5 might just be the ultimate tool in your arsenal. The invisible selfie stick effect creates professional-looking third-person shots that would normally require a camera operator. The 4-mic array with built-in Wind Guard captures clear voice narration even in breezy conditions, making it ideal for on-the-go commentary.

What truly sets it apart for vlogging is the ability to capture everything and decide on framing later. No more missing moments or having to reset shots - just record and reframe in post-production. The InstaFrame mode is particularly valuable for vloggers who need to quickly share content, offering ready-to-post footage with minimal editing required. 

First Day with the X5

I decided to test the X5 on a sunrise hike at my local state park. The first thing that struck me was how intuitive the camera feels. Even without diving deep into the manual, I was able to start shooting within minutes.

The dual 1/1.28" sensors captured the morning light filtering through the trees with impressive clarity. What truly blew me away was the ability to capture absolutely everything around me without worrying about framing - a game-changer for someone used to constantly switching between wide and zoom lenses. 

The Invisible Selfie Stick Effect

I purchased the Invisible Selfie Stick separately (note that it doesn't come in the box), and I'm so glad I did. The effect is nothing short of magical - the camera completely removes the stick from footage, creating orbiting third-person views that look like they were shot by a drone or another person. This feature alone fundamentally changes the storytelling possibilities. 

Battery Life That Goes the Distance

On my full-day hike, I recorded intermittently for about 4 hours, and the battery still had juice left. The claimed 185-minute continuous recording time seems accurate from my initial testing. Even better, when I did need to charge during a lunch break, the fast charging topped it up quickly. 

Waterproof Without the Bulk

Later in the day, I took the X5 to a small waterfall pool. Being able to submerge the camera without a bulky case (it's waterproof to 49ft) made capturing half-under, half-over water shots incredibly easy. The footage came out crystal clear with vibrant colors, even in the shadier areas. 

Low Light Performance

As the sun set, I was particularly impressed with how the X5 handled diminishing light conditions. The triple AI chip design clearly makes a difference, with footage showing remarkably little noise even as darkness fell. This is a significant upgrade from previous 360° cameras I've used. 

InstaFrame and App Experience

The InstaFrame mode is perfect for quick sharing. I was able to instantly grab flat videos that were ready to post to social media without extensive editing. The companion app is intuitive, and the AI-assisted reframing made it simple to create professional-looking edits in minutes rather than hours. 

My Thoughts

The Insta360 X5 feels like a significant leap forward in action camera technology. The combination of 8K resolution, impressive low-light performance, advanced stabilization, and thoughtful features like the replaceable lens design make it a versatile tool for travelers and content creators.
