My Night with The Addams Family: A Wickedly Enchanting Evening at Boston's Boch Center

Friday night, I stepped into the delightfully macabre world of The Addams Family at the magnificent Boch Center Wang Theatre, and I'm still under its spell! When the invitation landed in my inbox for the VIP reception and opening night performance, I knew this was going to be a night to remember—and it absolutely delivered.
VIP Treatment at the Revere Hotel

The evening began at the stylish Lobby Bar of the Revere Hotel, where the pre-show VIP reception was held. The moment I walked in, I was greeted with a gothic-inspired cocktail that Morticia herself would approve of—deep crimson with wisps of smoke curling from the surface. The reception area was transformed with subtle nods to the Addams aesthetic—and the occasional disembodied hand serving appetizers (okay, that last part might be my imagination running wild).

Fellow theatre enthusiasts and Boston socialites mingled around the bar, sharing excitement about the production. The buzz was palpable—especially given the recent popularity of the Wednesday series on Netflix. Everyone was curious to see how the stage production would capture that iconic Addams charm.
From Reception to Red Carpet

After the reception, we made our way to the historic Wang Theatre. If you haven't been, the Boch Center's crown jewel is a breathtaking venue with ornate details that perfectly complemented the gothic themes of the show. The grand staircase and chandelier had me feeling like I was entering the Addams mansion itself!
The Show: "To Die For"

Now, let's talk about the performance. Without giving too much away, the musical follows Wednesday Addams who has grown up (I know, I feel old too) and fallen in love with a "normal" boy from a respectable family. The comedy unfolds as the two families meet for dinner, and as you can imagine, hilarity and chaos ensue.

The costume design deserves special mention—every iconic look from Charles Addams' original cartoons was reimagined for the stage with stunning detail. Morticia's dress with its legendary silhouette had the audience gasping, and Gomez's pinstripe suit was absolute perfection.

The standout performances came from the actors playing Gomez and Morticia, whose chemistry was electric. Their tango scene? Absolute fire! And Wednesday's struggle between her dark nature and new love was portrayed with surprising depth and vulnerability. Uncle Fester provided much of the comic relief, breaking the fourth wall in the most delightful ways.
Why You Should See It

If you're on the fence about catching this production during its Boston run, let me convince you:The music is surprisingly catchy—I've had "When You're an Addams" stuck in my head for days
The set design is ingenious, with the Addams mansion transforming before your eyes
It's the perfect balance of nostalgic references and fresh storytelling
The dance numbers (especially the ancestors from the crypt) are spectacular

As someone who grew up with reruns of the original Addams Family and fell in love with the 90s movies, this musical adaptation hit all the right notes. It honors the legacy while bringing something new to the table. The production runs through the end of the month at the Boch Center, and I highly recommend grabbing tickets while you still can.

A huge thank you to the Boch Center for the invitation to this spectacular opening night. The Addams Family musical proves that, as Morticia would say, "Normal is an illusion. What is normal for the spider is chaos for the fly." And sometimes, embracing the chaos makes for the most memorable evenings.
