How to Propagate a Pothos Plant in Water 

Materials Needed 

• Water
• Gardening Sheers
• Clear container 

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1:

Make snips directly below the lowest leaf node. Nodes are those tiny brown bumps on the stem that are the key to growing new roots.

Step 2:

You’ll need a stem with at least two leaves to root your plant and you’ll want to remove the leaf that is closest to the stem. (Your new roots will form from the node.)

Step 3: 

Place Cuttings in Water: Fill a clear glass container submerge cuttings into water. Place the cuttings indoors near a window, in indirect sunlight. Refresh water every 1 to 2 weeks.

Step 4: 

Once the cuttings have at least one inch of roots transplant into the soil. 

Step 5:

Select a potting container with proper drainage holes. I prefer to use terracotta pots.

Step 6:

Place the cuttings around the pot edges and add more soil to keep the cuttings in place. Add more cuttings to the middle and add soil as needed. Water your new pothos plant until water runs out of the bottom of the pot.

Step 7: 

Place your new pothos in an area where it will get adequate light. Fertilize once a month.

As many of you know, I just became a plant mom last month, and it really has been a learning curve for me. I've always loved having plants, however, I haven't been a plant mom for over ten years. Unfortunately for me, one of my plants had root rot, due to overwatering, and poor drainage. I caught the root rot at first just in time. However, I skipped all of the necessary steps to properly recover the plant. Below, I'm sharing 5 tips for when your plant has root rot.

6 Tips for When Your Plant Has Root Rot  

Stop Watering
When your plant has root rot, you shouldn't continue to water the plant, and you should defiantly not water the plant in the same pot that has the root rot.

Cleaning Roots
Once all of the soil is removed from the roots, it's really important to ensure that the roots are properly cleaned. I used peroxide to clean my plant's roots. However, do your due diligence, and see what works best for your plant. 

Clean Pot
Make sure the new pot or old put is thoroughly cleaned prior to repotting.

Larger Pot
You should not place you plant in a larger pot when repotting and trying to combat root rot. Try to keep your plant in the same size pot.

Water Plant
Your plant should only be watered once the roots have been cleaned, and the plant has been re-potted.

Planter Pots
Yes, it's nice to have beautiful planter pots. However, being a newbie to plants it's more important to go with the safer alternative when repotting plants. Terracotta planters have amazing benefits for plants. Terracottas pots are porous which allows for air and water to move through the walls, preventing soil disease and root rot.

Back in May, I decided that I was going to venture back into plant mom life. I first started off with cuttings. That I received from some of my sister's plants. Then I decided that I was going to actually purchase some plants. I went to my local Shoprite and purchased a few plants for my home. Through this process, I've learned a lot, and I've learned the hard way about jumping back into plant mom life. 


Over Watering
For some reason, I didn't realize that my plants were actually submerged in water from overwatering. You would think that this might be a good idea. Because you can propagate some plants in water. However, It's not and can cause fungus, which can possibly lead to plants dying. 

Root Rot
Root Rut is typically caused by overwatering. I caused root rot to one of my plants, due to poor drainage. I didn't realize the necessary steps for repotting for root rot. Listen learned! One of the things in which I learned is that you shouldn't put the plant in a larger pot, and the root of the plant has to properly be cleaned. 

Pots
Terracotta pots porous nature allows for air and water to move through the walls, preventing soil disease and root rot. Which makes it perfect for indoor plants. I didn't realize at first how much of a huge difference this makes. 

Lighting
Though, I'm still figuring out the lighting in my home. All of my plants have similar lighting requirements. However, they're not the same. It's really not about where I want them stationed in my home. It's all about their wants and needs.

For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect plants for my home. I’m a huge plant lover and had a bunch of plants in my home when I first purchased it. I’m not sure what happened. However, it has been on my heart for almost a year now to get some houseplants for my home. I went to my local Home Depot last week and the pickings were slim. If you follow me on Instagram, a couple of weeks ago, I mentioned going to my local nursery for house plants, and they did not carry any. I’ve tried my best to not go to the stores as often as I would during normal circumstances. For the last couple of months. I’ve been going to the grocery stores once a month. Hence, the delay in purchasing houseplants. I’ve since learned that there are a ton of shops online that actually sell and deliver plants to your home. However, I wanted to first see how some of the plants actually look and get a feel for them, and the aesthetic I’m creating for my home. On a whim, I decided to go to my local ShopRite. To my surprise. They had a plethora of plants in stock. I was able to pick up a couple of plants for under $50. All of the plants in which I purchased assist with purifying the air.
