The Ultimate Guide to Back to School

This article will provide you with the ultimate guide to back to school. It is a comprehensive guide that covers everything from backpacks and school supplies, to what you should wear on your first day.

This article is meant for students of all ages. Whether you are a high school student, college student, or even a parent of a child who will be starting kindergarten this year, this article has tips and tricks for everyone!

What are the Best Backpacks for Kids in 2022?

There are many factors to consider when buying a backpack. The most important thing to remember is that the backpack should fit comfortably, be durable, and have enough space for all of your child’s school supplies.

Tips For Buying Your Child's First Backpack When it comes to buying a backpack for your child, there are many things to consider. You want to find the perfect size and style for them. You also want one that will last and be comfortable for them to wear all day long. Here are 6 tips for buying your child's first backpack:
1. Find a backpack that will last through the year- Every kid needs a backpack for school, and you don't want to have to buy a new one every few months. Look for something durable and wear-resisting that will last through the year.
2. Find out your child's size- In order to find the perfect size backpack, it is important to know your child's size. For kids, it is best to choose backpacks that are large enough for their books and supplies, but small enough to fit comfortably when they are carrying them.
3. Find out your child's personality- What kind of backpack do they like? If your child likes cartoon characters, then you should purchase a backpack with designs featuring their favorite cartoon characters.

What are the Best Pens and Pencils?

The best pens and pencils are those that suit your needs. The most important thing to remember is that there are many different types of pens and pencils with a variety of purposes.

The best pens for artists are usually a mix of water-based inks, which can be used on any type of paper, and oil-based inks, which dry quickly but can only be used on special surfaces such as canvas or paper.

There are also many different types of pencils for different purposes. For example, if you're going to do a lot of writing, look for one with a sharp point for better precision. If you're going to draw or sketch, look for one with a softer lead that's easier to smudge or blend.

It's offically back to school for some, and for some parents homework time can really be alot. Trust me, I know however, once you create structce, a routine, and communication with you childs teacher. Homework simply will become alot easier in your home. Below, I'm sharing my homework tips for parents.

Homework Tips for Parents

Create A Routine
It's really as simple as creating a routine for your children, children want and need some type of structure. Yes, it's okay for your children to have a snack when they come home. However, if they don't have any sports or extracurricular activities after school, homework should be the first priority.

Homework Station
No matter the size of your home. Create a homework area for your children. Make sure the area is fully stocked with items they'll need, it's so easy to get distracted.

Cut Down On Distractions
It's so easy to be a distraction, try to cut down on them by not being a distraction to your children, especially at the start of the school year, as they're still getting in the swing of being back to school.
Communicate with Other Parents
I know, the last thing you want to do is feel like you're a burden to other parents, however, it really does take a village. Whether your child is struggling, or you simply are struggling to maintain a homework routine for your children, connect with other parents to see what works for them.
Know When To Take a Break
I know, you really just want to get the homework over and done with. I get it. Been there, done that! However, it's so important to know when to take a break for you and your child. Studies have shown that it's very important to take a break during homework time. Especially as your child is getting older and the homework expectations are increasing.

Know What You're Good At

During college, I've learned that one of my favorite subjects is history and I love helping my son when he has history homework. However, that's not the only subject he has. When he was smaller, it was super easy to brush up on my math skills. YouTube and Google search has truly been my best friend. Now that he is older and in high school. I seek assistance in the areas that I'm not too confident in.

Know When to Get Help
Our local library offers free tutoring and a lot of the tutors will assist with a range of subjects. Learn what resources are out there. Communicate with other parents. Maybe you guys have children the same age, and they're good at math and you're amazing in English. Some people really don't mind helping if you just ask. They may even have a child in the same grade or a litter older who excels in the subject. If they're unable to assist you, many people know of amazing tutors that they could refer you to.

Communicate with Your Child's Teacher
It's so important to communicate with your child's teacher. Ask for resources that will assist your child in their class. A lot of teachers love to help in any way needed. A lot of teachers will also give an outline of the year/semester so you're able to see what the expectations and assignments will be moving forward. If you have a question about an assignment, ask.

Do you have any homework tips for parents?

As a child, I looked forward to back-to-school time every year, my parents would take us shopping, and I would look forward to all my new stationery, and school clothes. As a parent, it seems like back-to-school shopping can really creep up on you. I've really streamlined the entire back-to-school process for my family. Which has allowed me to start the process sooner, and work on our back-to-school shopping list. Below, I'm sharing tips that have helped me save on my back-to-school shopping finds.

Create A-List

It's so easy to get to the store and forget all about your wants/needs, it's so easy to overspend once you walk into a store without a list.

Budget

Create a budget and stick to it! Most schools provide a supply list, use that list to create a budget, and figure out how much you're going to allot to school clothes.

Cheap vs Value

As a parent, it's so easy to go school shopping for something and it's a cheap price which is great for the moment, however, it doesn't have any value. For example, I purchased a book bag for my son at one of my favorite stores, it was a "cheap" price. The bookbag lasted two weeks tops, I found myself looking for a bookbag, wasting time, and spending more money. The replacement bag I purchased was from L.L.Bean. I never purchased a book bag for my son again, to this day he still has the book bag. I never had any issues with the bag. Though they changed this return policy, the bookbag was of great value.

Tax-Free Week

Most states offer tax-free weeks, do a quick search to see when your tax-free week is.

Shop Sales

Most stores have sales for back school, make sure to signup for all of your favorite store's newsletters and text alerts for sales.

Rakuten

Rakuten offers cashback on all of your favorite stores, I've been using them for years, especially during the holidays, and it's always nice to receive my cashback check in the mail.

Know What Supplies You Already Have

Know what supplies you already have, towards the end of the school year I typically place all of my child's school supplies in a basket. Once back to school time starts, I typically go through those supplies to see what's still needed.

I receive monetary compensation from General Mills in exchange of my endorsement of Box Tops For Education.

One of my favorite times of the year is back to school time. Each year I try my best to improve our routines and learn how I could assist my child's school better in any way. I believe my love for back to school time started as a kid. It was pretty much like Christmas to me. I would have butterflies in my stomach with so much excitement looking forward to meeting my new classmates and teachers. Now that I have children I live through them. I remember it like it was yesterday. On my son’s first day of school. I don't believe I had gotten any sleep the night before. I remember ironing his clothing for the week, making sure if lunch was made and being in all over how cute his bookbag was. Back then, our school system only had half of the day for kindergartens. I remember the excitement of him one day taking the school bus. That day with butterflies in my stomach, worried about how he would do and engage with his peers. Now that the kiddos are older, the process has gotten a lot easier. We have routines and systems in place that make the process run a lot smoother. I remember his first year of school. He came home with a thick packet and a ton of school reading material. As a parent, especially if this is your child's first year of school. It can really be overwhelming. However, I'm sharing tips today that would assist you with master this school year and beyond. I still get butterflies in my stomach. Especially, last year with one attending college, and another entering high school. However, the systems that I have in place makes me look like a pro.

Back to School Hacks + Ways to Support Your Child’s School

Routines
One of the best things that I could have done was creating a before and after school routines. It makes it so much easier when the kiddos wake up in the morning and come home from school in the afternoon. The kiddos know, when they wake up they have to complete their hygiene. Get their book bags ready and enjoy breakfast and grab an after-school snack. I've learned that having routines is so important and really school makes the school week a lot easier. When the kiddos get out of school, they know that the first things that have to be completed their homework. Prior to completing their homework, they decide if they would like their snack before or after homework. Most of the time they prefer to have their snack after completing homework. I typically let the kiddos restock the snack area. If something is running low. They're responsible for adding it to our grocery shopping list, opening the package and clipping the Box Top. The kiddos actually love this process. Any documents that need to be signed and/or seen by me is added to our school folder at this time. Homework is checked and returned back to the kiddos.

Snack Area
We have a snack area in our home. I love to keep the kiddos favorites snacks on hand. I love creating a running Costco's shopping list so I know that I won't forget these items when I do go to the store. If we're running low or even out of their favorite snacks and/or cereals. The kiddos will highlight or make a star by that item. I love giving back to their school by purchasing the breakfast cereals and snacks that they love. It's truly a win-win situation for our household. I learned about Box Tops for Education my son’s first year of school. I would always see the Box Tops on the everyday items that I would purchase. What I love about Box Tops for Educations is that Box Tops for Education gives back 10 cents for each box top clipped and sent to your child's school. Box Tops for Education is a wonderful way for your children school to get the necessary items needed to have a wonderful school year. My son's school has a box tops drop off area in the main office. You can easier ask the schools secretary the best place to send box tops. I usually place all of the Box Tops in a ziplock bag until they're needed. We usually will do a monthly drop off of the Box Tops.

School Documents
Within the first couple of years of the kiddos attending school. I learned very quickly that it was important to have a routine for school documents. Like most kids, the documents would magically end up on my desk and disappear at the same time. Having a designated area for school documents has made my life school much easier. The kiddos know where the folder is. I love having it super bright folder so it's an eye catcher and easy to find. You can also have the kiddos decorate their own folders or even have separate folders for each child. I like to just have one. At the end of each night. I go over the folder and complete any documents that are needed and place the documents in the kid's school folder. At this time, whatever box tops that we have collected for the month. I divide and place them in the kiddos backpack in a plastic bag. Unless my child's classroom is having a Box Tops competition. This typically makes it a lot easier for the teacher to submit the Box Tops. The teacher may have a collection area in her room. We're at the point now where the family will save the Box Tops for us and give it to use when we visit them. It's nice because no matter how small the gesture is, it really helps out with each school.

I was reading Mimi's post and I thought it would be great to share what I do to organize for back to school. Plus, what I implement through the year as well. As this is my Mimi King's last year of middle school. I have been implementing the same routine for a while now.

Review School Calendar
Add all dates to your planner and/or phone. Typically stay away from solely relying on my phone for important events. I typically will add things to my phone and my planner to ensure that I have the information in multiple areas.

Batch create and/or freezer cook after-school meals in advance- My teenage pretty much acts as if he is starving every day after school. I typically will have his meals created prior to him arriving home. I love the idea of having simple snacks like the list below.

  • Chicken nuggets
  • Leftovers if possible
  • Sandwich
  • Batch spaghetti and meatballs or ziti
I love creating a variety of meals and freezing them and taking them out the day or the night before.
My folder from last school year

Create a Mommy School folder
I'm not sure what year I decided to do this. However, I have a little office area in my living room and I have a folder designated to any important documents from his school. This year, I'm using a bright green folder to ensure that it's not missed on my not-to-clean desk.

Chore List
I found some really cool magnets at the Dollar Tree. Prior to school ending, we implemented in our home this idea. Every day the magnets are moved to the left side. Once an item is completed the magnet is moved to the right side and is reviewed by myself to ensure that it was completed. I love this idea. Because it's paperless. I do not have to rely on an app and it is something that my son sees every day prior to leaving.

Batch Iron
I've been doing this pretty much all of my son's life. We did go through that stage where he felt as if he was old enough to do it himself. Which was cool. However, lately or at least prior to last school year ending. I started back just ironing about ten outfits for him to wear during the week. If he decides to wear the clothing cool. If he decides to wear something else, that's fine as well. I typically do this for myself as well. I really dislike running around trying to find stuff to wear when I have to go somewhere. I typically iron 7 to 14 outfits for him. Weekly or bi-weekly.

Do you have any Back to school organization tips?

Hey Friends,
School doesn't start in these parts for another two weeks. We are slowly but surely getting our back to school shopping done. While in route to checking off our Summer Bucket List. I stumbled on a Target and Zara. Sharing some of the items I picked up for my Mini King and I in the video below. Thanks for watching!

Happy Monday!

Sharing some "Back to School" items I was able to snag during the summer sale at H&M.  I'm not sure why it's so hard to "ball on a budget" while shopping for boys. However,  I try my best to know when all of my favorite stores have sales. Since my little guy entered middle school last year, we had to sadly stop shopping at GYMBOREE. Even though he could still fit the clothing. I didn't want him to get teased (kids can be so mean no days)... Last year I had to re-introduce myself to H&M. To be honest, the transition to H&M has been awesome.. He loves the clothing and I love the prices. Anywho, check out my haul!

Back to life, back to reality... So it's been two weeks since my baby started school. I am so proud of the way he is adjusting. I find myself implementing various routines that are working thus far.  Since I don't eat meat, and everyone in my home is such a picky eater. I find myself cooking less, and less for my family. **sigh** However, they have no idea, that they really don't have a choice and I run this house. I try my best to have a snack prepared for him once he gets home. I also try to make sure that  I am present and he has my full attention. Phones, electronic devices are away. Since he has to complete an hour of reading. I am going to start reading during his reading time as well. So we can have more of a "family reading time". I've also noticed that we need to revisit having a custom checklist for him. Just to keep him on track.

(Does his shift look familiar? It's from our Gap shopping haul here)

Anywho, enough about me and my family... how is everything going in your neck of the woods?

As always I will be linking up to Mimi's at Unlikely Martha linkup HERE

Good Morning!

I can't believe we're already the first day of school 2015. Of course I had to snap a picture of this great moment. Can you believe that Michael is already in the seventh grade. Now that he's back in school I'm thinking of ways that I can make this school year super productive. If you follow me on periscope I did a little video yesterday about how I'm working on just various ways of making our morning more productive. One of the routines that I'm trying to implement is making sure his room is cleaned prior to leaving for school.

I'm trying to explain to him that the more stuff that he has to do after school is leaving him with less free time to do the stuff that he loves. I've learned that kids need lots and lots and lots of structure.

AnyWho are you implementing any new ideas this school year?
