Simply Tasheena

Picture this: You're halfway through making your grandmother's famous gingerbread cookies when you realize you're completely out of brown sugar. The stores are packed with holiday shoppers, parking is a nightmare, and you've got a kitchen full of half-prepped ingredients waiting for you. Sound familiar?

Here's a game-changing kitchen hack that every home baker needs to know: you can make perfect brown sugar in under two minutes with just two ingredients you probably already have.
The Magic Formula

Forget emergency grocery runs. All you need is:
  • White granulated sugar (any brand works)
  • Molasses (unsulfured is best)

That's it. Seriously.
  • The Perfect Ratios

For Light Brown Sugar:
  • 1 cup white sugar + 1 tablespoon molasses
For Dark Brown Sugar:
  • 1 cup white sugar + 2 tablespoons molasses

For Extra-Rich Dark Brown Sugar:
  • 1 cup white sugar + 3 tablespoons molasses
How to Make It (It's Ridiculously Easy)
  1. Dump and mix. Add your molasses to the white sugar in a bowl.
  2. Get your hands dirty. Use a fork to mix everything together, pressing out any clumps.
  3. Keep mixing. Don't stop until the color is completely even with no streaks.
  4. Use immediately or store in an airtight container.
The whole process takes less time than finding your car keys.
Why This Works (And Why You'll Never Go Back)

When you make brown sugar at home, you get:

Fresher flavor – No stale, rock-hard brown sugar that's been sitting on a shelf for months.

Perfect moisture – Store-bought brown sugar often dries out. Yours will be perfectly moist every time.

Control – Want something between light and dark brown sugar? Make it exactly how you like it.

Convenience – Never run out of brown sugar again. As long as you have white sugar and molasses, you're golden.
Holiday Baking Game-Changer

This trick is especially clutch during the holidays when you're doing marathon baking sessions. Making multiple batches of cookies, fudge, and holiday treats? Mix up exactly the amount of brown sugar you need for each recipe instead of buying multiple boxes.

Plus, homemade brown sugar works perfectly in all your holiday favorites:
  • Chocolate chip cookies that need that perfect chewy texture
  • Gingerbread with deep, rich flavor
  • Brown sugar glazed ham for Christmas dinner
  • Pecan pie that actually tastes like brown sugar (not just sweet)
Pro Tips for Holiday Bakers

Storage hack: Keep your homemade brown sugar soft by tossing a slice of bread or a couple marshmallows in the container. They'll keep it perfectly moist.

Flavor boost: Experiment with different types of molasses. Blackstrap molasses creates an incredibly rich, almost coffee-like depth that's amazing in spice cookies.

Batch prep: Make a big batch at the beginning of your holiday baking marathon and store it in mason jars. It keeps for months.
The Bottom Line

In the time it would take you to drive to the store, find parking, wait in line, and drive back, you could have made enough brown sugar for your entire holiday baking list. Your cookies will taste better, your stress levels will be lower, and you'll have one more impressive kitchen trick up your sleeve.

Trust me – once you try this, you'll wonder why you ever bought brown sugar in the first place.

Hey beautiful souls! Can we talk about finding that perfect product that makes you feel like you're glowing from within? Because I think I've just discovered my new holy grail, and I'm literally bursting to share it with you all!
The Product That's Got Me Obsessed

DERMA E's Vitamin C Luminous 2-in-1 Primer has completely transformed my morning routine, and honestly, I'm not sure how I lived without it. This little tube of magic is everything I've been searching for in a primer – and so much more.
What Makes This Primer Special?
Skincare Meets Makeup Perfection

This isn't just your average primer, beauties. DERMA E has created something truly innovative here – a product that works double duty as both skincare treatment AND makeup base. The star ingredient? Stabilized Vitamin C that actively brightens your complexion while you wear it. It's like getting a mini facial every time you apply your makeup!
Clean Beauty Done Right

Can we take a moment to appreciate that this formula is completely silicone-free? As someone who's been trying to clean up my beauty routine, finding a primer that doesn't rely on heavy silicones but still performs amazingly is like finding a unicorn. Instead, they use Pullulan – an all-natural polymer that grips your makeup for extended wear without any of the pore-clogging concerns.
My Experience

I've been testing this for three weeks now, and the difference is noticeable from day one. My skin looks more radiant, my makeup stays put for hours (we're talking 10+ hour days here!), and I love that I can actually wear this alone on no-makeup days for a natural, healthy glow.

The texture is lightweight yet hydrating – perfect for my combination skin that gets oily in the T-zone but dry around my cheeks. Those nourishing oils they've packed into this formula? Pure genius. My skin drinks it up without feeling greasy or heavy.
How I Use It

With makeup: After my moisturizer and SPF, I apply a thin layer all over my face, focusing on areas where my makeup typically fades first. The grip it gives my foundation is incredible – everything just sits better and looks more polished.

Without makeup: On lazy weekends or quick errands, I love wearing this alone. It gives me that subtle, lit-from-within glow that makes people ask if I'm wearing highlighter (spoiler: I'm not!).
This primer has earned a permanent spot in my everyday routine. At a time when we're all looking for products that multitask and actually benefit our skin, DERMA E has delivered something special. The fact that it's working to brighten and improve my skin while helping my makeup look flawless? That's what I call a win-win.

If you're in the market for a new primer or just want to upgrade your base game, I can't recommend this enough. Your skin will thank you!

The holidays are practically knocking on our door, and if you're anything like me, you're already mentally planning those cozy gatherings that make this season so special. While scrolling through old photos recently, I came across this shot of me holding my beloved MacKenzie-Childs Check Enamel Oval Platter, and it got me thinking about what truly makes holiday entertaining memorable.

It's not about having the most elaborate menu or the fanciest decorations – it's about creating moments that feel intentional, warm, and beautifully curated. And honestly? Having a few quality pieces you absolutely love makes all the difference.

Start with Statement Pieces That Tell Your Story

When I first invested in this MacKenzie-Childs platter, I wasn't just buying serveware – I was investing in countless future memories. There's something so satisfying about reaching for pieces you genuinely love, knowing they'll elevate whatever you're serving. Whether it's your grandmother's famous stuffing or a simple cheese board, the right platter transforms the ordinary into something special.

My Top Tips for Effortless Holiday Hosting

1. Invest in Versatile, Quality Pieces

Choose items that work across seasons and occasions. That beautiful platter? It's perfect for Thanksgiving turkey, Christmas cookies, Easter brunch, or summer fruit. Quality pieces like this become the foundation of your entertaining style and honestly pay for themselves over time.

2. Create a Signature Table Setting

Develop a go-to combination that feels distinctly you. Maybe it's mixing patterns like I do, or perhaps it's all white with natural elements. Having a signature style makes hosting feel less overwhelming because you already know what works.

3. Prep Your Space in Layers

Start with your foundational pieces weeks ahead. Polish your serving dishes, check your linens, and make sure everything is ready to go. There's nothing worse than realizing your favorite platter needs a good cleaning when guests are arriving.

4. Focus on the Experience, Not Perfection

The most memorable gatherings aren't about flawless execution – they're about connection. Your guests will remember how they felt, not whether everything was Pinterest-perfect.

5. Build Your Collection Thoughtfully

You don't need everything at once. Start with a few pieces you absolutely love and build from there. I'd rather have three amazing serving pieces than fifteen mediocre ones.

Why Quality Matters More Than Quantity

When you invest in well-made pieces, you're not just buying for this holiday season – you're creating heirlooms. My MacKenzie-Childs pieces have been part of countless celebrations, and they still look as stunning as the day I brought them home. There's something so satisfying about using beautiful things regularly rather than saving them for "someday."

Making It Personal

The beauty of holiday hosting lies in those personal touches that make your gatherings uniquely yours. Maybe it's the way you arrange flowers, your signature cocktail, or simply the love you put into every detail. When you surround yourself with pieces that bring you joy, that happiness is contagious and creates the kind of atmosphere your guests will remember long after the last dish is cleared.

Looking Ahead to the Holidays

As we head into this magical season, I'm already dreaming of candlelit dinners, laughter-filled kitchens, and tables that bring people together. Whether you're hosting your first Thanksgiving or your fiftieth, remember that the best gatherings come from the heart – beautiful serving pieces are just the cherry on top.

What are your go-to entertaining pieces? I'd love to hear about the items that make hosting feel special for you!

There's something magical about the satisfying crunch of a perfectly made tortilla chip. While store-bought versions are convenient, nothing compares to the incredible flavor and texture of homemade tortilla chips made from scratch. Today, I'm sharing my go-to recipe that combines the best of both worlds – the authentic corn flavor from masa harina with the flexibility of all-purpose flour.
Why Make Your Own Tortilla Chips?

After years of experimenting in the kitchen, I've discovered that homemade tortilla chips offer benefits you simply can't get from a bag:

Freshness Factor: These chips are crispy in a way that only comes from being made fresh. No stale, cardboard-like texture here!

Control Over Ingredients: You know exactly what goes into your chips – no preservatives, artificial flavors, or mysterious additives.

Customization: Want them saltier? Spicier? Thicker? You're in complete control.

Cost-Effective: A single batch costs a fraction of what you'd pay for premium tortilla chips at the store.
The Secret: Flour and Masa Harina Blend

What makes this recipe special is the combination of all-purpose flour and masa harina. The masa harina provides that authentic corn tortilla flavor we all love, while the all-purpose flour adds structure and makes the dough easier to work with. This hybrid approach gives you the best of both worlds – traditional taste with modern convenience.
Homemade Tortilla Chips Recipe
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup masa harina
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon Himalayan salt
  • 1 cup hot water
Instructions:

Step 1: Mix the Dry Ingredients In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, masa harina, and Himalayan salt. Make sure they're evenly distributed – no lumps allowed!

Step 2: Create the Dough Add the olive oil to your dry mixture, then gradually pour in the hot water while stirring with a wooden spoon. The hot water helps activate the masa harina and creates a more pliable dough. Continue mixing until a soft dough forms.

Step 3: Knead and Rest Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 3-4 minutes until smooth and elastic. The dough should feel soft and slightly tacky but not sticky. Cover with a damp towel and let rest for 15 minutes – this helps the gluten relax and makes rolling easier.

Step 4: Roll It Out Divide the dough into 8-10 portions. On a floured surface, roll each portion as thin as possible – we're talking paper-thin here! The thinner you roll, the crispier your chips will be.

Step 5: Cut Into Triangles Using a knife or pizza cutter, cut each rolled circle into 6-8 triangular wedges, just like traditional tortilla chips.

Step 6: Fry to Golden Perfection Heat about 2 inches of oil in a heavy-bottomed pot to 350°F (175°C). Fry the chips in small batches for 2-3 minutes until they're golden brown and crispy. Don't overcrowd the pot – this drops the oil temperature and leads to soggy chips.

Step 7: Season and Serve Immediately after frying, transfer chips to a paper towel-lined plate and sprinkle with additional salt while they're still hot. This is when the salt really adheres!
Pro Tips for Perfect Chips

Temperature Matters: Use a thermometer to maintain oil temperature. Too hot, and they'll burn before cooking through. Too cool, and they'll absorb excess oil.

Thin is In: Don't be afraid to roll the dough extremely thin. Thick chips might seem easier, but they won't have that satisfying crunch.

Fresh Oil: Use fresh oil for the best flavor. Old oil can impart off-flavors to your beautiful homemade chips.

Storage: Store completely cooled chips in an airtight container for up to a week – though they're best enjoyed fresh!
Serving Suggestions

These homemade tortilla chips are incredibly versatile. Serve them with:
  • Fresh guacamole and salsa
  • Seven-layer dip for game day
  • Queso blanco for an indulgent treat
  • Simply enjoyed on their own with a cold beverage

Making tortilla chips from scratch might seem intimidating at first, but once you taste the difference, you'll wonder why you ever bought them from the store. The combination of masa harina and all-purpose flour creates chips that are both authentic in flavor and satisfying in texture.

The best part? Once you master this basic technique, you can experiment with additions like garlic powder, chili powder, or even lime zest mixed right into the dough. The possibilities are endless!

So next time you're planning a party or just craving a snack, skip the store and spend a little time in the kitchen. Your taste buds (and your guests) will thank you.

Happy cooking!

Disclosure: I'm testing these gloves from DukWon Glove Co. this season. All opinions and blistered-hand memories are my own! This post contains affiliate links

Fall is officially here, and you know what that means—it's time to tackle that ever-growing outdoor to-do list! Whether you're raking mountains of leaves, hanging Halloween decorations, or getting an early jump on those Christmas lights (no judgment here!), having the right gear can transform these chores from dreaded tasks into satisfying weekend accomplishments.

And let me tell you, after years of dealing with blisters, cold hands, and gloves that fell apart after one use, I've learned that not all work gloves are created equal.

Why Quality Gloves Actually Matter

I used to grab whatever cheap gloves I could find at the hardware store, thinking "gloves are gloves, right?" Wrong! Here's what I've learned the hard way:
  • Protection matters: Your hands take a beating during yard work—from rough branches to sharp tools
  • Comfort is key: If your gloves are uncomfortable, you'll take them off (and then regret it)
  • Durability saves money: Investing in quality gloves that last beats buying new ones every season
  • The right glove for the right job: Different tasks need different levels of grip, protection, and flexibility

Discovering DukWon Glove Co.

This season, I'm switching things up and testing out gloves from DukWon Glove Co.—a company that's been specializing in high-performance work gloves for over 25 years. What caught my attention? They're made in Korea with a focus on durability, comfort, AND protection. Plus, they're breathable and washable, which means they can actually keep up with everything fall throws at us.

My Fall Glove Collection: Five Styles for Every Project

I'm trying out five different models this season, each designed for specific tasks. Here's the breakdown:

1. Grey Span-Nylon Glove with Black Nitrile Foam Palm Coating

Best for: Leaf cleanup, gardening, and everyday yard work

This is quickly becoming my go-to for general outdoor tasks. The nitrile foam palm gives you excellent grip even when things get damp (hello, morning dew on those leaves!), and the span-nylon keeps your hands comfortable during longer projects.

2. White Nylon Glove with White PU Top Coating

Best for: Holiday decorations, string lights, and delicate tasks

If you've ever snagged a strand of lights or scratched up a delicate ornament with rough work gloves, this pair is a game-changer. The PU coating provides just enough grip without the bulk, making it perfect for detailed work.

3. Grey Glass Fiber Liner Glove

Best for: Lighter DIY projects and home tasks

These are surprisingly lightweight while still offering solid protection. I love these for quick projects around the house or when I need dexterity but still want to keep my hands safe.

4. Grey Glass Fiber Glove with Black NBR Foam Palm Coating

Best for: Heavier yard work, hauling, and tougher DIY jobs

When I need to move branches, handle rough materials, or tackle more intense projects, these cut-resistant gloves are my pick. The NBR foam palm coating means I can maintain a solid grip without sacrificing protection.

5. Black Melange HPPE Blended Glove

Best for: All-around use and cooler weather projects

This is my everyday fall favorite. They're versatile enough for most tasks and provide that extra layer of warmth when the temperature starts dropping—without making your hands sweaty.

My Fall To-Do List (And Which Gloves I'm Using!)

Here's how I'm planning to put these gloves to work this season:

  • Leaf Raking & Garden Cleanup - Grey Nitrile Foam gloves
  • Halloween Decoration Setup - White PU Coated gloves
  • Gutter Cleaning - Cut-resistant Glass Fiber gloves
  • Holiday Light Installation - White PU Coated gloves
  • General Yard Maintenance - Black HPPE Blended gloves
DIY Projects - Depends on the task, but probably the Glass Fiber options
What I'm Looking For

As I test these gloves over the next few weeks, here's what I'll be paying attention to:
  • Durability: Will they hold up after multiple washes and heavy use?
  • Comfort: Can I wear them for hours without my hands getting sweaty or cramped?
  • Grip: Do they maintain traction in different conditions?
  • Versatility: Can I use them for multiple types of tasks?
  • Value: Are they worth the investment compared to cheaper alternatives?

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Work Gloves

No matter which gloves you choose, here are some tips I've learned for making them last:
  • Match the glove to the task: Don't use delicate gloves for heavy work (and vice versa)
  • Wash them regularly: Dirt and sweat break down materials faster
  • Store them properly: Keep them in a dry place away from direct sunlight
  • Check for damage: Small tears can quickly become big problems
  • Have multiple pairs: Rotate between pairs to extend their lifespan
Let's Talk!

Are you tackling any big outdoor projects this fall? What's your experience with work gloves been like?

And if you're curious about how these DukWon gloves hold up to a season of New England fall projects, stay tuned for my full review coming soon. I'll be putting them through their paces and sharing all the details!

Happy fall, everyone! May your leaves be few and your gloves be comfortable! 🍂🧤

As the crisp autumn air settles over Connecticut and the leaves begin their spectacular transformation, there's nothing quite like the warm, comforting aroma of freshly baked pretzels filling your kitchen. September marks that perfect transition from summer's end to fall's embrace, and these golden, buttery soft pretzels are exactly what your home needs to celebrate the season.

I stumbled upon this recipe during a particularly cozy weekend when the first hints of fall weather had me craving something warm and satisfying. What started as a simple baking experiment quickly became a household obsession – and for good reason. These pretzels strike that perfect balance between chewy and tender, with a gorgeous golden exterior that practically begs you to tear into them while they're still warm.
Why These Pretzels Are September Perfect

There's something magical about baking during the early days of fall. The house feels warmer, more welcoming, and the anticipation of cozy months ahead makes every homemade treat feel extra special. These pretzels capture that feeling perfectly. They're substantial enough to satisfy those heartier autumn appetites, yet simple enough to make on a lazy Sunday afternoon when you're not quite ready to dive into heavy holiday baking.

The secret to their irresistible texture lies in the traditional baking soda bath – that brief dip that gives each pretzel its characteristic chewy crust and deep golden color. The addition of molasses adds a subtle depth that pairs beautifully with the honey in the dough, creating layers of flavor that make each bite more satisfying than the last.
Tips for Pretzel Perfection

After making these countless times (seriously, my neighbors probably think I've opened a pretzel shop), I've learned a few tricks that make all the difference. First, don't rush the rising time – that hour gives the dough the structure it needs for the perfect chew. Second, the water temperature matters for both the yeast and the baking soda bath; too hot and you'll kill the yeast, too cool and the bath won't work its magic.

The pretzel shaping might seem intimidating at first, but embrace the imperfection. Some of my most beloved batches have had wonderfully wonky shapes that somehow taste even better than the perfect ones. There's joy in the process, especially if you rope family members or friends into helping – it becomes less about precision and more about the shared experience of creating something delicious together.
Serving Suggestions for September

While these pretzels are absolutely perfect on their own, September offers so many wonderful pairing opportunities. Serve them alongside a warm bowl of butternut squash soup for the ultimate comfort meal, or pair them with sharp cheddar and crisp apple slices for an elevated snack that celebrates the season's best flavors. They're also fantastic with a robust mustard or that cheese dip mentioned in the recipe – perfect for football viewing parties or casual gatherings with friends.

For a truly indulgent treat, try serving them warm with a side of salted caramel dip or even a rich beer cheese sauce. The combination of the slightly sweet, chewy pretzel with these rich accompaniments is pure autumn bliss.
Making Memories, One Pretzel at a Time

What I love most about this recipe is how it transforms an ordinary day into something special. The process itself is meditative – the kneading, the patient waiting for the rise, the careful shaping, and finally, that moment when you pull golden, perfectly baked pretzels from the oven. It's the kind of baking that fills not just your stomach, but your soul.

These pretzels have become my go-to for everything from weekend family breakfasts to impromptu gatherings with friends. They're conversation starters, comfort providers, and proof that some of the best things in life really are the simplest.

So as September settles in around us here in Connecticut, I encourage you to give these a try. Let the warm, yeasty aroma fill your home, gather your loved ones around the kitchen counter, and create your own delicious memories with these irresistibly easy golden baked soft pretzels.

  • Brush each pretzel with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  • Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until deep golden brown.
