As I sit here, still basking in the afterglow of what might be the most rejuvenating weekend I've had all year, I can't help but share my experience at one of Chicago's most elegant hotels. This Mother's Day, I decided to treat myself to something special – a stay at the iconic LondonHouse Chicago, and let me tell you, it exceeded every expectation. 

First Impressions

From the moment I stepped into the stunning lobby of this historic building (originally built in 1923 as the London Guarantee Building), I knew I was in for something special. The juxtaposition of classic architecture with modern luxury creates an atmosphere that feels both timeless and contemporary. The check-in process was effortless, with staff who seemed genuinely excited for me to experience the property. 

The Room

I was assigned room 1235, a King Bed Corner Studio, and when I opened the door, I audibly gasped. The floor-to-ceiling windows offered sweeping views of the Chicago River and the city's magnificent architecture. The corner placement meant I had twice the view – a panoramic feast for the eyes that changed with the light throughout the day.

The king bed was the centerpiece of the room – plush, inviting, and dressed in crisp, high-thread-count linens that made sleeping in feel like a necessary luxury rather than an indulgence. A tasteful seating area by the windows became my morning coffee spot, where I'd sip Nespresso from the in-room machine while watching Chicago come alive below.

The bathroom deserves its own paragraph – sleek marble surfaces, a rainfall shower, and Malin+Goetz toiletries that made even the simplest shower feel spa-like. I may have smuggled an extra shampoo into my suitcase (don't tell!).

The Crown Jewel: LH Rooftop

If LondonHouse has a crown jewel (and it has many contenders), it would have to be LH Rooftop. Spanning three levels and offering what might be the best views in Chicago, this rooftop bar and restaurant is both a tourist attraction and a local hotspot – always a good sign.

I visited at sunset on Saturday, and the experience was nothing short of magical. Sipping on their signature "LH Royale" (a champagne cocktail with a unique twist), I watched as the city lights began to twinkle on and the sky transformed through a palette of pinks and oranges. The energy was vibrant but not overwhelming, with a mix of hotel guests and well-dressed Chicagoans creating a sophisticated but unpretentious atmosphere.

The small plates menu deserves mention too – I sampled the tuna tartare and truffle fries, both executed perfectly. While not inexpensive, the combination of exceptional food, drinks, service, and that incomparable view made it worth every penny.

It's often the small touches that elevate a hotel stay from good to memorable. At LondonHouse, those included:

The invisible selfie stick effect creates professional-looking third-person shots that would normally require a camera operator. First Day with the X5

There's something almost magical about seeing a city from the water. This past weekend, I discovered one of Boston's hidden gems that instantly earned a permanent spot on my spring and summer bucket list – the Boston Harbor City Cruises "Lighthouses & Tales of Boston Harbor" experience. 

Setting Sail

As someone who's constantly searching for those perfect photo opportunities and unique local experiences, I have to admit I had high expectations when I boarded the cruise boat at Long Wharf. What I didn't expect was how quickly those expectations would be surpassed.

The 90-minute journey began with the gentle rocking of the boat and the cool harbor breeze – a welcome respite from the warming spring temperatures on land. I grabbed a spot on the right side of the vessel (pro tip!) and settled in for what would become one of my favorite Boston experiences to date.

Maritime History Comes Alive

What sets this cruise apart isn't just the spectacular views – though those alone would be worth the price of admission. It's the incredible narration provided by our guide, a passionate local historian whose knowledge of Boston's maritime past seemed genuinely limitless.

As we glided across the harbor waters, our guide shared fascinating tales of infamous shipwrecks, heroic lighthouse keepers, and the crucial role these beacons played in Boston's development as a major port city. Each lighthouse we passed had its own unique story, its own personality – from the historic Boston Light on Little Brewster Island (America's oldest lighthouse station) to the charming Graves Light with its distinctive granite tower.

Don't forget sun protection. The reflection off the water intensifies the sun's rays.
Keep your camera ready but also take time to simply absorb the experience without a lens between you and the view.
